“In trying to provide a nurturing environment in which the youth that we serve can thrive, we feel it is imperative to create the same type of caring culture for our employees,” says Dr. Robert Maher. As a social services organization, St. Christopher’s Inc. isn’t always able to provide high compensation, so the nonprofit finds other ways to recognize and appreciate its employees. Each year at the organization’s gala, one employee is recognized for going above and beyond to impact others. And because employees often work long hours, St. Christopher’s always makes the day before each holiday a half day, so that employees can enjoy a bit of extra time with their families. “We truly believe that the little things you do go a long way to show an employee that you care. Every employee receives a hand-written birthday and holiday card,” says Maher.
“Our CEO has a lunch program in which he meets with some of the young people in our care and invites any staff member to join them to talk about life at our organization. Along with an open-door policy that our entire executive team has, this creates a culture in which top management doesn’t feel that far removed from our direct care staff.”
