Q: What made you want to enter the staffing industry?

A: Immediately after college, I was exploring various career paths. I met with the president of a search firm — a very new field at that time, and from afar — I felt an immediate connection: These people got paid for making people happy. I dove in and never looked back.

Q: What is your culture like at Search Consultants International?

A: Our culture is to be great listeners and be students of what makes businesses and their people special. We are also extremely involved in business and community initiatives.

Q: Search Consultants International is a member of the MRI franchise network. Is the connection with MRI helpful to your daily operations, and if so, how?

A: Search Consultants International is a global firm that is fortunate to be part of a network that offers exceptional training tools and access to industry specialists in all countries and industries. If Disney needs someone to lead a new initiative, if Living Classrooms needs a community outreach director, if Pfizer wants to do a 300-person expansion in oncology, or if a local cybersecurity startup needs business development talent, we can instantly put together a team to help identify exact-fit talent.

Q: What sets Search Consultants International apart from other companies in the staffing industry?

A: With 35 years in the business, we have built an unparalleled network of talent and relationships, allowing for the fastest access to desired talent. We have learned to be great listeners, taking time to understand the culture of our client and allowing for accurate and successful matching of talent to need. I like to say we “get it” and we genuinely care!

Q: The staffing industry is extremely dependent on companies’ hiring decisions. How do you make it through tough economic times when hiring is down in many sectors?

A: No doubt, hiring is not as it was 10 years ago. That said, more than ever, real talent — over-achievers — will always be in demand. We have made sure to always seek out and maintain connections with resources that keep us in front of the best talent.

Q: What characteristics do you look for in the job candidates you add to your database?

A: Candidates who enter our database are referred to as “best business athletes.” Characteristics include consistent top level of performance; a positive, upbeat mindset; clear integrity, involvement and natural curiosity; and perhaps most important, emotional intelligence.

Q: Search Consultants International has been exploring some new lines of business, such as consulting and contract sales. What is your plan for growth in those areas?

A: In these tough economic times, many companies simply don’t have the budget for hiring much-needed talent. With our aforementioned database of talent and history of relationships, we found a strong interest in connecting our client companies with opportunities. We have become their contract sales organization. Not surprisingly, this area is booming!

Another area of growth, consulting, has led us to opportunities to look within a client company and evaluate staff, upgrading where needed, rightsizing where needed, training where needed, and ultimately dramatically improving performance while lowering costs!

Q: As a leader, what advice do you have for other entrepreneurs? 

A: Be a great listener, only accept responsibilities where you know you can deliver, and only work with clients who really need you! Finally, be involved and help connect people to great initiatives in your community!
