With a long-tenured career in the engineering services industry, Frank Valenti is leading Advanced Sciences and Technologies, LLC (AS&T) to become one of the region’s foremost firms in supporting the continued mission of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other federal agencies.

Q: What’s your technical and leadership background and how has it prepared you to serve as AS&T’s president and CEO?

A: I have more than 30 years of progressively responsible experience within the business areas of government and private industry engineering services. I’ve performed complex business analysis for new business development and have applied my expertise to the programmatic planning and analysis for division and company operations. I have held positions as a principal, senior vice president and COO of a successful small business, and I have also held the position of division president with Fortune 500 company L-3 Communications.

Q: What is AS&T’s founding mission and what are its operating principles?

A: Advanced Sciences and Technologies, LLC (AS&T) was established in 2006 for the purpose of providing continued high-quality technical, administrative and engineering support services to our long-term FAA, DoD, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and commercial clients as a small business. The principals of AS&T have well established and demonstrated experience in successfully providing quality and cost-effective support to our clients for more than 30 years. AS&T’s technical understanding of our customer’s missions has established a reputation with our customers and our employees as a management team fully capable of developing and maintaining organizations that provide our customers a no-risk option for superior engineering and technical support services.

Q: Describe the success AS&T has experienced in its tenure serving the engineering and program needs of some of the nation’s leading federal departments.

A: AS&T has been awarded 49 contracts in excess of $190 million since beginning operations in March 2006 and has current monthly revenue in excess of $1.6 million. These contracts have positioned AS&T with a staff of more than 125 full-time engineers and support professionals. The work performed on these contracts is for the FAA, DOD, DHS and the U.S. Coast Guard. AS&T had revenue of $15.0 million for 2013 and $20.0 million projected for 2014. Currently, AS&T has six offices, and our corporate office located in Berlin, NJ, has a top secret security clearance that was approved by the DOD Defense Security Services.

Q: What challenges has AS&T faced in the last several months, and how has the company adapted to the changing federal contracting environment?

Sequestration and lower agency/program funding has been challenging to our industry. AS&T, like most companies have been forced to streamline our costs without sacrificing the integrity of our expertise and performance. For AS&T, our folks from management on down have really stepped up and have taken on more responsibilities in order to continue to provide outstanding services and job performance. It has been a company wide shared philosophy that has been very successful as evidenced by AS&T’s continued growth and stellar reputation.

Q: How have you had to shift your leadership/management style as AS&T has grown? What hurdles do you anticipate having to overcome as AS&T continues to grow?

AS&T has not changed its leadership or management style. We have always maintained a seamless structure stressing an open door policy, which promotes great communication. We view our company as a family. Our employees have never been just a number on a cost ledger. The company has always been flexible with our employees, which in turn has our employees being loyal and committed to company goals and objectives.
