CHOOSING THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITIES
When Marathon TS, Inc. was founded, it tried to do too much and spread its resources too thin, says CEO Pamela Siek. Avoiding this issue can be tough as a fast-growing small business in the government contracting industry, but Siek and her team at Marathon are dedicated to proper resource allocation. Siek says it’s important not to chase every single opportunity. “You need to first find what you are great at and where your company can succeed. You then need to focus your resources to those opportunities, contracts and agencies. Do not get sidetracked by chasing everything that comes across your desk,” she says.
Quick Tip: “You really need to do your homework and not just take people for their resume. Use social media and industry networks to look into a person’s credentials.”
Though this plan for growth has been a major factor in the company’s success, Siek says Marathon’s greatest asset has been its team. She believes that by hiring the right people, providing them with the tools they need to succeed and trusting them, Marathon will continue to grow. “At the end of the day, it is the people who make the difference. Without the right team, it does not matter what plan you put together, what lessons you learn, what contracts you go after.”
