GROWTH THROUGH REINVENTION
FCi Federal provides managed professional, administrative and technical services to federal agencies, focusing particularly on the immigration, visa and travel market. In addition to FCi’s work with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Department of Homeland Security, the company also has major contracts at the Department of State and the Department of Justice. FCi’s current growth is the result of continuous innovation and strategic fine-tuning based on lessons learned since its founding, says president and CEO Scott F. Miller.
Quick Tip: “A great leader remains actively engaged in day-to-day operations, in addition to driving the vision and strategy of the organization.”
In 2001, industry consolidation shrank FCi’s client base, and the company reorganized, moving offices from Tysons to Reston, VA. By 2004, founder Sharon Virts had to close the office, lay off most of the staff, and manage the firm’s two remaining contracts from her basement. In 2006, the company won three government contracts and moved to an office in Leesburg the following year. Then, FCi made a large gamble and put all its resources into one particular bid. The company lost and decided to reinvent itself by entering and competing in the immigration services business, where several big contracts were coming up for bid. That strategic move marked the turning point for FCi’s expansion and breakout revenue growth.
