SPIRIT OF INNOVATION: “Our strategy around innovation focuses on giving employees the opportunity to solve problems and drive outcomes, instead of just delivering solutions based on a set of requirements,” says John Marcante, CIO of The Vanguard Group. “In the past, companies have defined success by measuring progress against pre-defined timelines and specific milestones, but our goal is to shift to an operating model that puts the focus on driving business value at startup speed.”
FUN FACT: “I’m an avid surfer. I picked it up as a challenge from my youngest son, Matt.”
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE: The financial services industry has become more competitive as new technology has allowed startups and other outside players to become a disruptive presence. “The solutions that IT delivers are crucial to helping Vanguard react to those changes and remain competitive,” says Marcante. “One of our most recent success stories is the rollout of Vanguard’s Personal Advisor Services (PAS) in 2015. PAS is a unique, hybrid financial advice offer that combines Vanguard’s time-tested investment methodology with a best-in-class digital experience.”
ABOVE AND BEYOND: When Marcante took over as CIO in 2012, his team endeavored to better understand changes in the financial services landscape and create an enduring vision to redefine how Vanguard delivers business solutions. This process has led Vanguard to embrace cloud technologies and adopt new, service-based architectures, says Marcante.
