OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES: For Michelle Glasson, president and COO of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, self-improvement is a key part of leadership. “I’m always trying to learn to better myself so I can better my employees,” she says. “I engage with other business owners in the area, and we share business strategies and ways to keep up with the changing business world.” Glasson also considers herself a hands-on leader, and makes herself available to employees 24/7 in case she is needed.
FUN FACT: “I can deadlift 185 pounds.”
STRONG CULTURE: Glasson chooses her employees carefully. “I want my employees to want to work here,” she says. “I want the outside world to say, ‘Hey, what are they doing there? I want to work there.’ Right now, that’s the culture we’ve been building. … I find that training, communicating and treating your employees with respect is key to being a profitable and successful business.”
DAY-TO-DAY BALANCE: To balance day-to-day operations with a big-picture vision for Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, Glasson relies on preparation and focus. “The night before, I will typically try to prepare for the next day,” she says. “I will write down some notes, … come the next day and start to tackle those things. Being in the type of service industry that I’m in — residential plumbing service — there are times where my plan for the day can go off track simply because something needs my attention. … However, I try to keep myself accountable and get back on track as quickly as possible.”
