DEDICATED TO IMPROVEMENT
Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) is a public charity, and a division of the New York Community Trust, with the mission of enhancing the wellbeing of the people and communities on Long Island. The company aids local nonprofits by connecting its donors with local charities, and offering grants and technical assistance to Long Island’s nonprofit sector. As the organization continues to grow and support its community, it plans to increase its visibility to let more Long Islanders know about its work and services. “We’ve been here since 1978 and still there are so many charitable people that live and work on our island who have never heard of a community foundation. Once they do, they become our biggest fans and love working with us,” says executive director David M. Okorn.
Quick Tip: “A great leader needs to know how to actively receive input and listen to other viewpoints.”
As more and more donors create funds at LICF, the organization has experienced an increase in pressure on its time. To alleviate this pressure, LICF has made use of funder collaboratives, which allow the organization to work with groups of donors who are concerned with the same issues. This collaboration helps LICF continue to provide the same level of personalized service. In leading LICF, Okorn has learned the importance of thinking creatively and bringing the right people together to address Long Island’s most pressing issues.
