The first three employees Jon Dressler hired when he founded Rare Roots Hospitality more than 15 years ago still work for the company. That’s a testament to the company’s culture, he says. In addition, all 12 of Rare Roots’ managers have been promoted from within. The reason? Dressler says the company’s culture is all about forming strong relationships with each employee. These relationships are built through things like Rare Roots’ family meal, which takes place every afternoon at 4:30 in each of the company’s restaurants. Employees and leaders sit down together to enjoy each other’s company and eat a chef-prepared meal before the dinner service begins. Things like this, says Dressler, are the reason Rare Roots enjoys loyalty from its employees and a low turnover rate.
“Our culture is a balance between basic mafia business principles, socialism, laissez faire, democracy and the American welfare system.”
