In 2010, Philip Maung had a corporate culture epiphany. He took Hissho Sushi from a company that thought mostly of work and the bottom line, and saw high turnover, to a fun workplace that employees looked forward to coming to each day. Armed with a set of strong values and a dedication to creating a great place to work, Hissho Sushi has implemented perks like flexible time, a wellness program with health fairs and professional trainers, and its Hissho Foundation committee, which makes philanthropy a priority. The company also created a Core Values Team that is dedicated to scheduled monthly volunteering events, as well as teambuilding outings such as bowling, paintball and bake-offs. In addition, Hissho Sushi created its very own library, which works on the honor system and includes books in many different languages.
“Mutual respect and accountability, as well as open communication on all sides, is inherent in building a great company culture.”
