LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING: Mentorship at State Bank of India (California) (SBIC) is not just about learning finance; it’s about building bridges as well, says VP Rokas Beresniovas. That’s why the company partners with The Washington Center to host interns from all over the world every season. This spring, the company is excited to host interns coming from Pakistan, especially in light of the political situation between India and Pakistan.
FUN FACT: Beresniovas has supported educational development for female Afghani students.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: When Beresniovas first joined SBIC, there were questions about whether the DC office should even remain open. Today, it is a model for success. “The reason for this is the focus on building a community through targeted events specific to the culture of DC as part of our business strategy,” Beresniovas says. For example, this summer, the company is hosting an event at the University Club of Washington, DC focusing on the development of the international business climate in India.
DRIVING VALUE: In the first quarter of 2015, SBIC’s SBA export finance was ranked first in the area. It also ranked eighth out of over a hundred banks for SBA lending in the Washington, DC market in 2015. This is a significant turnaround for the company, as it has only been in the market for a couple of years, and prior to 2015 had very little visibility in the community.
