Ratner Companies is a family-owned and operated company of hair salons. Founded by stylists Dennis and Ann Ratner as the Hair Cuttery in 1974, the company has grown to include the brands Bubbles, Salon Cielo, Salon Plaza and Cibu International. Altogether, Ratner Companies operates nearly 900 salons in 16 states.

Fun Fact: Bubbles stylists host in-salon makeover events for the spouses of wounded warriors and for female wounded warriors who are recuperating at Walter Reed.

Co-founder and president Ann Ratner was born in the UK, where she worked as a hair stylist in a local salon. She moved to the U.S. because she saw greater opportunities for advancement here. She settled in Washington, DC, and soon found a job as a stylist in a local salon. A few years later, she married Dennis Ratner, who was also a hair stylist. The two used savings of $5,000 to launch Hair Cuttery, whose purpose was to provide value-priced services for the whole family.

“As Hair Cuttery began to expand, I was anxious to make a bigger mark of my own; that’s when I opened Bubbles in 1978,” says Ann Ratner. “By then, I had learned from my experience at Hair Cuttery. I knew the importance of developing a good support team, of being organized and having a clear strategy for success. Because I really understood what it was like to be a stylist, I was able to create an environment that fostered creativity and passion.”
