Committing to wellness: “The mission of the Wellness Connection Program is to empower our employees to be active and responsible partners in self-improvement,” says Jeff Knueppel, general manager of SEPTA. While participation is strictly voluntary, he says, “we encourage our employees to take advantage of the programs and services that are provided at different sites throughout the year. Employees are [our] most valuable resource and the state of their health is very important to our success.”
FUN FACT: SEPTA holds annual blood drives in support of the American Red Cross.
Special perks: SEPTA’s program is designed to provide options and flexibility, with the idea that no program is right for everyone and employees should be able to choose what fits their schedule and lifestyle. For example, there is a variety of weight management programs and fitness center discounts. Employee options for nutrition counseling include appointments at many SEPTA sites in the city and suburbs, as well as counseling sessions via Skype.
Solid results: Early this year, SEPTA launched a diabetes prevention program. Twenty-three employees are enrolled in the yearlong pilot, three of whom have already reached their goals. One is no longer considered pre-diabetic. Overall, program participants have lost 137 pounds so far. The number of employees participating in SEPTA’s offerings, including National Walk At Lunch Day events, has been rising steadily.
