Industry: Wholesale distribution
In 1918, Joseph Lorber travelled to Philadelphia with an entrepreneurial spirit and knowledge passed down from his father, who was a tinsmith by trade. His business, J. Lorber Company, served as a well-stocked supply house, and 98 years later, it remains a distributor with a wide array of products. Today, as in the past, the company focuses on providing quality products with a high level of customer service.
Most members of the Lorber family grow up working in the business part-time or during breaks from school. However, if family members want to come into the business in a leadership role, the process is slightly different. The company requires that they spend at least five years working outside the family business. Once they rejoin J. Lorber, they work in various areas of the company before moving into leadership.
Quick Tip: “Discourage entitlement. Be humble.”
“As a family business, our employees are an extension of our family. Having an atmosphere where everyone feels appreciated and part of the family is critical,” says president Steven Lorber. In fact, for many employees, working for J. Lorber has become a family affair as well, with multiple generations joining the team.
“Our story is that of the American dream, where an immigrant worker facing persecution can leave everything behind and start a new life for [himself and his] family,” says Lorber. “We never forget the sacrifices those family members before us have taken to get our business where we are today.”
