“I look back on the history of starting the company, and why we did it, and what we tried to achieve, and it’s really creating economic value for our clients,” says CLX Logistics chairman and CEO Steve Hamilton. That’s why the company is focused on showing the client an actual positive impact on profit-and-loss statements.
“I told everybody when I started the company that I believed in nepotism, and nothing would make me happier than for employees to bring their sons, or their daughters, or their husbands and wives into the company,” says Hamilton. However, any family members who want to come onboard must meet technical requirements. Hamilton also values work experience from outside companies.
Quick Tip: “Prepare for succession planning early. It’s probably one of the more difficult things that you have to do as you age.”
“Over the years and in the various roles that I’ve been involved with, I’ve learned that the employees who are truly empowered … and know where the company is going, have an awful lot to say about how we can improve processes,” says Hamilton. That’s why CLX employs a sharing environment that actively solicits employee input.
“What I’d like to see is this being a continuously operating family business,” says Hamilton. With Hamilton’s sons working in the business, and five grandchildren, he may see that goal come to fruition.
