Smith Flooring, Inc. (SFI) supplies and installs commercial flooring products, including hardwood flooring and broadloom carpet. The business is certified as minority-owned, woman-owned and disadvantaged, which has helped it compete. However, SFI hasn’t relied on certifications alone. “We stand out [because] we provide a high quality of service,” says president Kristin Smith.
Fun Fact: Smith serves on the advisory board of Providence House of Delaware County, which assists individuals with resources for productive life skills and employment opportunities.
Its union affiliation has helped SFI participate in the building of major projects in the Greater Philadelphia area, but the company has also benefitted from being small and nimble. “We are very responsive to requests to work nights, weekends, overnight and holidays,” says Smith. “Some of our competitors are too large to make quick and timely responses to some last-minute requests.”
During the recent recession, SFI came close to going out of business, but ultimately kept its doors open. “I have learned that entrepreneurs never ever give up,” says Smith. “I will never give up fighting for the life of our company. My husband and I both feel that we have to show by example to our employees that individual leadership matters.”
