The New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA) is the largest professional organization serving the needs of CPAs and aspiring CPAs in the state, with a membership of more than 15,000. COO Ellen C. McSherry oversees the management of all programs that support the organization’s strategic plan, mission and objectives.
Quick Tip: “I make it a point to ‘stop and smell the roses’ regularly and to take time for me.”
McSherry also manages all aspects of the association’s human resources, including hiring, outplacement, performance evaluations, benefit structure and administration. “The human element is key to the success of any organization. As a result, it’s our goal, as Jim Collins aptly stated, to always have the right people in the right seats on the bus,” says McSherry.
Prior to joining NJCPA, McSherry worked for 13 years at one of the Big 4 accounting firms, but was laid off following a merger. “Driving home that night, I felt like the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders,” she says. “My termination from the firm was a true blessing, as it allowed me the opportunity to realize how important it is to really take the time to think about me and what was important to me.”
