Jacquie Holmes, a native of New Zealand, found her calling during a summer internship in accounting for the American Horse Shows Association. Her work at that organization, where she was later hired as CFO, taught Holmes the ropes of nonprofit accounting. Three years later, American Horse Shows relocated its headquarters, and Holmes decided to strike out on her own, founding Kiwi Partners Inc. “It was not an easy decision, but the time was right for me to pursue my dream of launching my own business,” she says. Kiwi Partners provides outsourced accounting services to the New York nonprofit community.
Quick Tip: “I try to foster a nurturing environment where good ideas and achievements are recognized.”
Six years in, Kiwi Partners hit a roadblock. “Operationally, we were not keeping up with the sales growth. Our infrastructure and internal operations needed to improve,” says Holmes. In 2008, she hired a process re-engineering specialist. “She is still with us today and a vital member of our team. … The challenge helped shape me as a leader because I realized that being a leader also means knowing when to seek help and let someone else take the reins.”
As a result of its mission, Kiwi Partners is deeply involved in the nonprofit community. “We are a for-profit organization, but we serve a hundred nonprofits,” says Holmes. “We have a budget of donations because we want give back to our clients every year. … We support many different organizations across many sectors, such as healthcare, education, community outreach, religion and social services.”
