In the early 1970s, psychotropic medication allowed people who had previously been kept in hospitals to return to the community. However, there was no real place to receive them. Federation of Organizations brought together the family support groups that had developed through the years around the major psychiatric hospitals in downstate New York, and was founded to help develop community-based services. Today, the nonprofit employs more than 500 people throughout New York City and Long Island.
Quick Tip: “As we saw a need, we looked for funding to provide the service.”
Each year, Federation of Organizations hosts a recognition luncheon celebrating the work of its Senior Volunteer Corps, which raises funds for senior programs. The nonprofit also has hosted golf outings and a casino night. “We are beginning to explore our options for using social media as another vehicle for fundraising,” says Barbara Faron, CEO of Federation of Organizations. “We have been successful in obtaining government and foundation grants to support our activities.”
One of the Senior Corps’ signature initiatives is The Foster Grandparent Program, which places low-income seniors as paraprofessional volunteers working with children at risk. Federation of Organizations began the program with a handful of volunteers, and it has since grown to 140 volunteers serving 46 sites in Suffolk County. The nonprofit also received a grant to operate a Senior Companion Program, directed at recruiting senior volunteers to work with the homebound, frail elderly.
