DONE DEAL: The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is one of the largest hunger and anti-poverty organizations in the state. “Our mission is to fight hunger and poverty and assist those in need with long-term solutions,” says Debra De Jesus Vizzi, president and CEO. Vizzi has a unique partnership with Good Shepherd Services in New York City. She spent her entire life in the foster care system, including some time at Good Shepherd’s group home for girls in Manhattan. As a result of that experience, she was able to attend an elite high school in New York, graduate and attend college. Earning a master’s degree in social work, she vowed to give back to Good Shepherd Services and her mentor there, Sister Paulette LoMonaco.
Fun Fact: The FoodBank provides pet food to the Humane Society as well as seven pet pantries in New Jersey.
BIG IMPACT: “This partnership and mentoring provided the necessary advocacy and efforts to protect and feed children,” says Vizzi. “The FoodBank has a strategic initiative to feed and make visible the plight of hungry children.” The partnership with Good Shepherd increased the FoodBank’s profile, and helped raise awareness of how hunger affects children.
