DONE DEAL: The Bronx Museum of the Arts collaborated with El Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba on an art exchange. “The exhibition offered U.S. students, scholars, artists, travelers, members of the New York community and Bronxites the opportunity to view the breadth of contemporary art from Cuba,” says Holly Block, executive director. “The Bronx Museum has been working with the arts community from Cuba since the launch of the first Bienal de La Habana [art exhibition] and we are committed to continuing to build the cultural dialogue between our two countries.”

Fun Fact: “The south wing of the museum used to be a synagogue. The steps in our main exhibition gallery led to what was then the bimah, where the Torah would be read.”

BIG IMPACT: The international attention devoted to the art exchange increased funding possibilities for The Bronx Museum, says Block. “The creation of meaningful partnerships has been crucial to our success. They have allowed us to leverage our resources, share audiences and expand our reach into areas and disciplines that we would not have otherwise explored. We have found them an essential ingredient for building community and developing a sense of ownership.”
