DONE DEAL: “Patients newly diagnosed or living with chronic kidney disease are often overwhelmed by the changes to their lifestyle and loss of control over their health,” says Kevin Longino, CEO of the National Kidney Foundation. “Gaining knowledge and having the necessary support helps them make informed decisions about their healthcare and lifestyle choices, gain back some control in their life and make a positive adjustment to their disease.” To help patients get there, the foundation created NKF Cares, a program offering support for people affected by kidney disease, organ donation or transplantation. NKF Cares acts as a free, direct resource for kidney patients, available on weekdays during business hours in English or in Spanish. Information specialists respond to callers to the NKF Cares toll-free helpline as well as through mail and email.
Fun Fact: Actors Larry Hagman and Gary Coleman have both served as spokespeople for the National Kidney Foundation.
BIG IMPACT: “The creation of NKF Cares has had a huge impact on our constituents and the quality of support they feel when they speak to one of the NKF Cares specialists,” says Longino. “For the first time in the history of the National Kidney Foundation, kidney patients and their families have a direct line to communicate with us for support on a variety of kidney health topics. This free access to helpful advice, website guidance and educational materials empowers our constituents to be better informed as their own best advocates in the fight against kidney disease.” In the past three years, NKF Cares has received more than 31,000 phone calls and 12,000 emails.
