GREEN AND GROWING
Something Classic Catering & Cafes is the exclusive caterer for three of Charlotte’s museums and manages the special events rental program for the Mint Museum. Its restaurant and café division includes Halcyon, Flavors from the Earth in the Mint Museum Uptown, The Modern Café at the Bechtler Museum, Community Café at Discovery Place, and more. “Co-owner Karen Teed and myself started catering for friends out of our home kitchen,” says president Jill Marcus. “We both had a passion for entertaining, decorating, and enjoying wonderful food and wine. That passion still holds true today.”
QUICK TIP: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle
Something Classic’s success is the result of the relationships it has developed with clients over the years. “Once we have promised something to our customer, and employees for that matter, we simply do what we say we are going to do,” says Marcus. The Green Goddess Alliance has been another competitive differentiator for Something Classic. As part of this initiative, “we compost, recycle and reuse our cooking oil for fuel,” says Marcus. “We sought out local famers, purchased local or organic lettuce and tomatoes, replaced our proteins with hormone-free ones and sent our leftover food to those in need.” The company also replaced all of its packaging with compostable products.
