For CEO Liz Etheredge, leading Mecklenburg Paint Co. Inc. has been an ongoing learning experience. “As a business owner, you don’t have much training at all,” she says. “It’s day-to-day learning of what works and what doesn’t work in growing the company. When work is plentiful, you have to make sure you have the right people in place to help make it grow successfully and manage it properly. When work is slow, you have to find enough for the painters to do.” Etheredge looks back with pride on the projects Mecklenburg Paint Co. has completed, including providing paint services for Bank of America’s Corporate Center.
Quick Tip: “My inspiration is very simple: I love to work! If you enjoy what you do, it’s not always considered ‘work.’”
When it comes to leadership, Etheredge believes in planning ahead: “The advice I would give is to remember there are going to be good years and bad years. Treat each client equally — big or small projects — because you never know where your next project can come from. Also, treat your employees with respect. They probably know a lot more than you do! … I usually learn something new every day.”
Mecklenburg Paint Co. is involved in several charitable activities through the trade associations it belongs to. Through the Building Owners and Managers Association, the company cooks meals at the Ronald McDonald House, plants flowers at the Florence Crittenton House and sorts school supplies for Classroom Central. Through the Institute of Real Estate Management, Mecklenburg Paint Co. donates time to Habitat for Humanity and Angel Tree.
