Location: Baltimore, MD
Industry: Food business
“We produce healthy traditional food using local and sustainable ingredients,” says Ned Atwater, founder of Atwater’s. Atwater’s operates restaurant cafés in the Baltimore metro area. “Our cafes all have a different feel, but all have in common a goal to make your day with great food and service.” Atwater’s goal is to always provide better food, better service and strong financial performance. “Our greatest challenge has been reaching our financial goals,” says Atwater. “We have incorporated the open-book management method, and we are getting closer to reaching our goals each year.”
Atwater’s requires family members to go through the same three-step interview process as all other candidates, and values desire to work in the business over experience. Family members “must work in all facets of the business,” says Atwater.
Fun Fact: “I courted my wife with my homemade loaves of bread.”
“We are an open-book management company,” says Atwater. “Each business is set up to be run with a general manager, and all locations share some functions at the central office. The next generation is working on how we educate our customers and staff on who we are and what we do.”
Atwater envisions that the company will uphold a high standard for food, service and the way employees are treated. “Future generations are welcome if they have the passion for this business,” says Atwater.
