John Garfield McLean Jr.
SVP and CFO
GROWTH CHAMPION: When John Garfield McLean Jr. joined The Harbor Bank of Maryland as SVP and CFO, the institution was dealing with regulatory issues that essentially required it to speak with regulators before making significant decisions. “Part of my job, along with other members of the management team, is to bring the bank to a more favorable position, so that many of the restrictive regulatory requirements [will] be removed.” McLean expects that the bank will put this episode behind it in the coming year. “I am proud to say that I was a part of that improvement, which is a huge success for the team.”
FUN FACT: “I am still the all-time leading scorer for basketball at my high school.”
STRONG RELATIONSHIP: During an interview, McLean told Harbor Bank chairman, president and CEO Joseph Haskins Jr. that he wanted the position only if Haskins would agree to be his mentor. “He agreed, and thus began our relationship,” says McLean. “As my boss, I knew that he would hold me accountable, but as my mentor, I knew he had accepted the potential burden of helping me to succeed.”
ABOVE AND BEYOND: McLean regularly stays in touch with regulators and auditors to keep informed about industry changes that may affect Harbor Bank. For the past three years, he has also served as an instructor for a continuing-education company. “In community banking, wearing multiple hats is essential,” says McLean.
