LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING: “To be a successful leader, you must first earn the respect of your subordinates,” says Gregory Sher, VP of business development at NFM Lending. Sher earns that respect by showing his team members that he is not above doing the tasks he asks them to do, and by listening to them and delivering change when necessary.
FUN FACT: “Prior to getting into the mortgage business, I was the sports director at WBAL Radio in Baltimore.”
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: “The biggest challenge for me as a leader is to always strive for a healthy balance between my commitment to my work and my commitment to family,” says Sher. “You overcome this by asking your spouse to put you in line when you fall out of line. A healthy life leads to better leadership, which delivers more reliable results.”
DRIVING VALUE: “When I merged my company, Citizens Lending Group, and its 120 employees into NFM in July 2009, it was the most challenging assignment of my professional career,” says Sher. “Integrating best practices among two different cultures, while at the same time staying close to my people, presented unique challenges and many sleepless nights.” Six-and-a-half years later, many of NFM’s key players are those who originated at Citizens Lending Group.
