LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING: “My leadership and mentorship style is similar to that of a sports team captain,” says Demaune Millard, COO at Family League of Baltimore. Millard sees himself as being both an advisor and a confidant for fellow team members. “In today’s work environment of increased demands, tight deadlines and stretched resources, my philosophy is to not contribute to those stressors, but focus on being a thought partner to finding solutions to challenging situations.”
QUICK TIP: “In those cases where you doubt yourself the most, always go with your gut, and never be afraid to ask for help.”
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: “My biggest challenge in my role was operationalizing our strategic plan,” says Millard. Millard was tasked with developing multi-year milestones that aligned with the Family League’s stated goal: “By 2030, all children in Baltimore will be born healthy, succeed in school and will graduate high school and will transition into higher education and into the workforce.” Milestones have now been established and incorporated into a performance management methodology.
DRIVING VALUE: “When I first came on board in May 2013, I established a coordinated public policy and communications strategy,” says Millard. “As part of that, I developed an internal process to review legislation and interject Family League in Baltimore’s child policy landscape. As a result, Family League is more vocal — and strategically so — in weighing in on proposed measures that impact the well-being of children in Baltimore.”
