LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING: “I see unique strengths and challenges in each of my direct reports, and I gently push them out of their comfort zone and encourage them to look at the same landscapes with new eyes,” says Amy Tang Seto, EVP and COO at the Baltimore Community Foundation (BCF). “My conviction in the Baltimore Community Foundation’s mission makes me fearless, and I encourage others to take calculated risks to make things happen. I communicate clearly, frequently and honestly.”

QUICK TIP: “If we are blessed with talents, wealth, knowledge, time and the like, it is expected that we use these well to benefit others. I encourage other executives to embrace gratitude and find ways to share what we are blessed with.”

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: “Eighteen months ago, I spearheaded a values statement exercise with foundation trustees and staff,” says Seto. “Almost 40 of us sat together to brainstorm what we did well and what qualities were most important to our civic leadership work.” The effort yielded three core values: trustworthy, inclusive, entrepreneurial. Seto is tasked with embedding these values in BCF’s work.

DRIVING VALUE: “How I lead and manage has a significant impact on the culture,” says Seto. “I apply the core-values lens in how I act. If I expect others to be trustworthy, inclusive and entrepreneurial, I must be a walking example.”
