Claudia Zacharias, MBA, CAE
President and CEO
Since 1984, BOC has provided credentials demonstrating competence and proficiency in the fields of durable medical equipment and orthotics and prosthetics. “In my seven years at BOC, our revenue has grown 47 percent, and our net income has grown 54 percent,” says president and CEO Claudia Zacharias. “Even more amazing is that this happened in a shrinking market where we have multiple competitors.” That success is due in part to the fact that BOC is ready to adjust its offerings based on customer feedback, she says. For example, ongoing conversations with stakeholders led the company to launch a new Certified Durable Medical Equipment Specialist certification.
Quick Tip: “First, define your values. Then align every decision with them.”
BOC used SocialToaster to obtain thousands of signatures on a petition asking the White House to stop a change in Medicare coverage that would have negatively impacted amputees. Based on actions by BOC and other stakeholder groups, the change in Medicare coverage was suspended pending further consideration. Another aspect of Zacharias’ leadership has been the empowerment of her staff. “This includes things like all staff members taking turns leading regular staff meetings, and core values that were identified and defined by an employee committee,” she says.
