Ginger Mihalik was hired as executive director of Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School in 2010. Under her leadership, the organization’s budget has grown by 188 percent. This, in turn, has created a groundswell of support from donors, resulting in a 145-percent increase in dollars raised. Mihalik says fundraising success comes from the hard work of building authentic relationships and developing a system to manage them. “As a fundraiser, our job is to be the matchmaker and find the donors who want to solve the same problems your organization does.”
Fun Fact: Mihalik serves as board chair for the Family League of Baltimore.
Outward Bound has garnered national attention for its Police Youth Challenge, designed to break down barriers that exist between urban youth and police. All Baltimore City Police Department officers participate in this program as part of their in-service training. The program pairs equal numbers of officers and students in small groups for a series of challenges.
Outward Bound’s teaching methodology “places equal emphasis on development of the character and the intellect,” says Mihalik. “We believe that character can be taught and learned, and that these skills are necessary in all individuals to build a resilient society.”
