Eileen Straughan’s founding vision for Straughan Environmental, Inc. was to create more sustainable outcomes for projects and the environment. Experience taught her that avoiding or minimizing impact to the environment helps clients stay out of the regulatory process and saves both time and money.
Fun Fact: Straughan’s strategic plan includes a goal of donating 5 percent of Straughan Environmental’s net operating income to nonprofits annually.
Straughan Environmental is responsible for the environmental management of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s I-95 Express Toll Lanes project in Baltimore. The firm also completed environmental studies and developed designs for stream and fish-passage restoration work on White Marsh Run as mitigation for unavoidable project impacts to wetlands and streams. Over the 10-year period of design and construction, this major transportation-infrastructure improvement project has proceeded smoothly, without regulatory delays.
“Sometimes working in environmental compliance and engineering, like any other profession, can be routine,” says Straughan. “I hold quarterly meetings with staff in our headquarters and at our other locations, and use those opportunities to tie the work they do on a daily basis to our vision of achieving greater sustainability.”
