Emerging Technology Centers (ETC) is a nonprofit organized to provide business support services to startup and early-stage companies that are technology-enabled. Under Deborah Tillett’s direction, the organization provides business incubation and support, including affordable office space and a community area for collaboration. “We help people start a business, grow a business and commercialize a business,” she says. “That means they are bringing on additional employees, getting revenue and bringing in outside capital and investment.”
Fun Fact: In 2015 alone, ETC’s current and graduate companies created more than 1,335 jobs.
Tillett and ETC have worked with more than 350 companies in the past 16 years. Those companies have created close to 2,500 jobs and raised more than $2.2 billion in outside capital. “More than anything, the services and opportunities we provide create an incredible economic impact on the city of Baltimore,” says Tillett.
ETC was among the first in the state of Maryland to launch a “lean startup accelerator.” The nonprofit secured funding from The Abell Foundation for its Accelerate Baltimore program, which is now in its fifth year. As part of the program, ETC chooses four to six companies, selected from applicants around the world, and provides them with seed investment and an intense, 13-week product launch program.
