SETTING THE TONE: Vicki Brick believes the basis of all relationships is trust and describes her leadership style as “tough love.” “People don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care,” she says. In business, Brick follows the Japanese philosophy “Genchi Genbutsu,” which means to “go and see.” She observes what her associates and members experience at the club level and provides feedback to the executive team.
QUICK TIP: “Hire people who believe in what you believe in. People cannot give what they do not have.”
JUMPING HURDLES: In 2012, Brick aided in the design and construction of the firm’s Brick Bodies Padonia club and built the team to run the club. Due to budget restrictions, she only had two months prior to opening to recruit and train the team. Once key people were in place, they worked together as a team to hire new people and train them. In two years, revenues at the Padonia location grew from $1.78 million to $7 million and EBITDA grew from $390,732 to $2.1 million.
GO-TO RESOURCE: Brick says that having a CEO who is also her father brings a unique set of challenges. “In the beginning, it was very hard to separate business conversations from family time,” she remembers. “But as time went on, we both recognized there is a time and place to discuss business.”
